Year 5 - Maths
Link area of rectangles to multiplication
In this unit pupils will calculate the area of a rectangle using multiplication and use their knowledge of area to solve problems.
You will learn to calculate the areas of rectangles using multiplication.
To find the area of a rectangle you multiply the length by the width. Known facts, mental and written strategies can be used to calculate area.
Length and width are two words used to describe the sides or dimensions of polygons. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Good multiplication skills are required for this lesson, including TO x O and HTO x O. Correction: Pupils who are insecure with short multiplication will need pre-teaching. Consider giving them a scaffold such as a times tables grid.
