Year 5 - Maths
Understand the concept of volume
In this unit pupils will explain what volume is using a range of contexts and describe the units used to measure volume. They will explain how to calculate the volume of a cuboid.
You will learn to describe the units used to measure volume.
Volume is 3D and is measured in 3D units. Volume is measured in the cubes of common length measures.
The amount of 3-dimensional space something takes up is called its volume. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may record different volumes for objects if they measure with inconsistent units (for example: different sized cubes). Correction: Encourage pupils to compare the volume of the same object measured with two different units. Discuss what you notice and draw out the importance for a consistent unit of measure.
