Year 5 - Maths
Understand the concept of volume
In this unit pupils will explain what volume is using a range of contexts and describe the units used to measure volume. They will explain how to calculate the volume of a cuboid.
You will learn to explain what volume is in a range of contexts.
Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up. Objects with the same volume do not always have the same mass.
The amount of 3-dimensional space something takes up is called its volume. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may think that the taller the object, the greater its volume. Correction: Use 3D objects as much as possible to compare, so pupils can develop their appreciation for multiple dimensions that contribute to the object's volume.
