Year 7 - Maths
Arithmetic procedures with fractions
This unit revisits and secures fraction operations and extends pupil understanding to division of whole numbers by fractions and division of fractions by fractions.
You will learn to use the mathematical structures that underpin the division of fractions to divide a fraction by a whole number.
A diagram can help to show the underlying structure. A fraction can be converted to an equivalent fraction.
The lowest common multiple is the lowest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: When dividing a fraction by an integer, some divide the numerator and denominator by the integer. Correction: Embed the understanding that when dividing by an integer, only the numerator is divided as the number of equal parts remains the same.
