Year 7 - Maths
Arithmetic procedures with fractions
This unit revisits and secures fraction operations and extends pupil understanding to division of whole numbers by fractions and division of fractions by fractions.
You will learn to use the mathematical structures that underpin the multiplication of fractions.
An array can help expose the structure behind multiplying fractions. The denominators give us the number of rows and columns.
The expression in a fraction that is written above the fraction line. It is the dividend. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Use of inefficient methods to multiply fractions, i.e. not considering common factors. Correction: The use of fractions with large numerators and denominators can be used to highlight when this is a useful method.
