Year 7 - Maths
Expressions and equations
In this unit, pupils learn about generalisation and formal algebraic manipulation techniques such as substitution, collecting like terms and factorising.
You will learn to use your knowledge of expressions and equations to solve problems.
Standardised notation is important when using algebra. Algebra allows us to generalise real life problems.
Expressions contain one or more terms, where each term is separated by an operator. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: A variable and an unknown are the same thing. Correction: A variable's value is not fixed. It can take any value within a given range. This means algebraic statements using variables can form proofs.
