Year 8 - Maths
Estimation and rounding
This unit helps pupils understand rounding to different decimal places, and significant figures. Pupils will also learn how to truncate numbers and understand the contexts in which these skills are useful. The unit ends will an exploration of rounding and inequality errors.
You will learn to estimate numerical calculations.
All numbers can be rounded to a given number of significant figures. Estimating gives you an idea of the size of an answer in context.
A quick estimate for a calculation is obtained from using approximate values, often rounded to 1 significant figure. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Division by 0.5 is the same as doubling. Correction: Reiterate the division of a number is the same as the multiplication of the reciprocal e.g The division of 0.5 is the same as multiplying by 2. e.g The division of 0.1 is the same as multiplying by 10.
