Understanding chemical reactions
This unit covers the conservation of mass in changes of state and chemical reactions, including atom rearrangement. It also focuses on representing reactions with formulae and equations, exploring combustion, decomposition, and displacement, and distinguishing chemical from physical changes.
You will learn to describe oxidation reactions, including combustion and rusting, and name the products of some oxidation reactions.
Combustion requires fuel, heat and oxygen, and will not happen without one of them. When a substance reacts to combine with oxygen, this is called oxidation.
a type of reaction in which oxygen bonds to elements of the reactants. Include the word in a full scientific explanation, not as a single label.
Mistake: Pupils often think that all metals rust. Correction: Explain that rust is a form of iron oxide and show pupils other examples of metal oxides, e.g. copper oxide, to show how different they are.
