Understanding chemical reactions
This unit covers the conservation of mass in changes of state and chemical reactions, including atom rearrangement. It also focuses on representing reactions with formulae and equations, exploring combustion, decomposition, and displacement, and distinguishing chemical from physical changes.
You will learn to describe what happens during precipitation reactions, and write chemical equations to show these.
Precipitation reactions occur when two solutions combine to form an insoluble solid. The appearance of a precipitate is evidence that a chemical reaction has occurred.
The process where a precipitate is formed. Include the word in a full scientific explanation, not as a single label.
Mistake: Pupils can struggle to understand that a solid is not always a large piece of a substance. Correction: Show visually the difference between a transparent coloured solution e.g. copper sulfate solution and a coloured precipitate solution. Practice describing the difference between a white precipitate and a transparent colourless solution.
