Year 9 - Geography

Planning river management

Rivers: How do rivers shape the land?

Unit Summary

This unit teaches pupils about how river processes shape the land and affect our lives. Pupils will use fieldwork to investigate downstream changes in rivers and use GIS to analyse flood risk across geographical space. Pupils will also evaluate different methods of flood management.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to explain why people have different views about flood protection and evaluate which locations are most likely to receive protection.

Key Notes

  • People have a variety of opinions on river management.
  • Building flood protection can increase flood risk downstream.
  • Areas of high economic value are more likely to receive funding for flood protection.
  • Slow the flow techniques are increasingly used to prevent flooding.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • stakeholder: any individual, group, or organisation that has an interest or concern in a particular geographical area, issue, or project
  • slow the flow: methods used to manage flood risk by reducing the speed and volume of water entering rivers in the upper catchment
  • cost benefit analysis: a decision-making tool that compares the cost of flood defenses with the economic value of what's being protected

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Only governments help make decisions on where flood protection is used.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain this geography topic using two clear key points.

People have a variety of opinions on river management. Building flood protection can increase flood risk downstream.

2. Define this geography term and use it in an example. 'stakeholder'

any individual, group, or organisation that has an interest or concern in a particular geographical area, issue, or project.

3. Correct this common geography misunderstanding.

Mistake: Only governments help make decisions on where flood protection is used. Correction: Many stakeholders are invloved in making decisions on flood defences.
