Year 9 - Spanish

Weekend activities: pronouns 'me', 'te', 'le', 'se' and 'les'

Weekends: 'ser', 'estar', 'ir' and 'hacer'

Unit Summary

This unit revisits 'ser' versus 'estar', regular and irregular comparative adjectives, adjective-noun number and gender agreement, forming the present continuous, reflexive pronouns, personal 'a', direct and indirect object pronouns, and gustar-type verbs.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to distinguish between actions done to others and to oneself using the reflexive pronoun 'se', and you can use indirect object pronouns to talk about weekend activities.

Key Notes

  • When the 'doer' (subject) and 'receiver' (object) of an action are the same person we use a reflexive pronoun.
  • To mean 'herself' or 'himself' in Spanish, use 'se' before a verb.
  • Indirect object pronouns (e.g. 'him', 'them') indicate the person or thing that is indirectly affected by the verb.
  • If the person affected by the action is 'me', use 'me'; if the person affected by the action is 'you', use 'te'.
  • To refer to one person or thing indirectly affected by an action use 'le', for more than one person or thing use 'les'.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • se: reflexive pronoun 'himself', 'herself' or 'itself'
  • reflexive pronoun: used to indicate doing something to yourself, words like 'myself' and 'yourself'
  • indirect object pronoun (IOP): replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • The indirect object pronoun 'le' changes to 'la' to match the gender of the person receiving the action.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain what you can now say or understand in this lesson.

When the 'doer' (subject) and 'receiver' (object) of an action are the same person we use a reflexive pronoun. To mean 'herself' or 'himself' in Spanish, use 'se' before a verb.

2. Define this key language word and use it in context. 'se'

reflexive pronoun 'himself', 'herself' or 'itself'. Say or write it in a short sentence so you use the word actively.

3. Correct this common language-learning mistake.

Mistake: The indirect object pronoun 'le' changes to 'la' to match the gender of the person receiving the action. Correction: 'Le' means 'to him', 'to her' or 'to it' regardless of the person receiving the action, e.g. 'le doy un regalo a Lucía' or 'le doy un regalo a Daniel'.
