Year 1 - English
Word class
In this unit, pupils learn about nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. Specifically, they learn about the conventions around singular and plural common nouns and proper nouns. They learn that adjectives can both describe and compare and they learn that verbs can be both doing verbs and being verbs.
You will learn to identify the difference between a doing and a being verb.
Verbs are doing and being words. Being verbs are "is", "are", "was" and "were".
tells the reader when something happens.
Mistake: Pupils may struggle to recognise 'being' verbs in sentences. Correction: Identify being verbs by showing them in their simplest form, then eliminating the nouns and adjectives from the same sentence.
