Year 1 - Geography
Local area: how do we read maps and plan routes?
This unit develops pupils' understanding of maps and route planning by exploring their school grounds. Pupils create maps, use symbols and keys, plan and follow routes, and apply their knowledge through simple fieldwork and observation.
You will learn to talk about your favourite places to play in the school grounds and locate them on an aerial photograph.
We all have opinions on our favourite places to play around school. Aerial images and large-scale maps show the main features of a place, e.g. the school grounds.
The school grounds are all the outside spaces at a school.
Mistake: Everyone has the same favourite area to play. Correction: Everyone has different opinions and can have different favourite areas to play compared to other pupils.
