Additive structures: addition
In this unit pupils will combine 2 or more parts to make a whole. They will learn addends can be represented in any order and that the = sign shows the whole and sum of the parts are equal.
You will learn to add parts to find the value of the whole and write the equation that represents this.
In an equation, each addend represents a part. You can combine the addends to find the sum.
A piece or section of the whole. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may have difficulty when the sum is presented on the left of the equal sign. Correction: Ensure that equations are arranged with the sum both on the left and the right of equal sign. Use term 'is equal to' to stress equality.
