In this unit pupils will combine 2 or more parts to make a whole. They will learn addends can be represented in any order and that the = sign shows the whole and sum of the parts are equal.
You will learn to represent both addition and subtraction and understand the link between them.
In problems, if the whole and one part of the whole are known, subtraction can be used to find the missing part. This can be represented using a subtraction equation.
To separate or take away one number from another, or to decrease an amount. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: The terms minuend, subtrahend and difference may be difficult if only used occasionally. Correction: Ensure the terms are used by the teacher throughout lessons and encourage children to use them when explaining their thinking.
