Year 1 - Maths
Solving problems in a range of contexts
In this unit pupils have the opportunity to apply their knowledge of counting, comparing and number facts to solve problems in a range of contexts.
You will learn to use your knowledge of addition and subtraction within 10 when solving problems.
Part + part = whole. Whole − known part = unknown part.
A piece or section of the whole. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may misrepresent a given problem meaning they are led to calculate the solution incorrectly. Correction: Children may identify the solution quickly when working with smaller numbers, but it is still important they are encouraged to visualise and represent each problem so that they know how to reveal the structure of the maths in more complex problems.
