Year 10 - French

La valeur de la famille : feminine adjective agreement

My personal world: Ma famille

Unit Summary

This unit revisits definite, indefinite and partitive articles, possessive adjectives, as well as adjective agreement and positioning rules. Pupils will learn one further adjective agreement rule. Lessons also further practise liaison and silent final letters.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to describe family behaviours and events using a range of adjectives, ensuring adjective agreement with nouns.

Key Notes

  • To make an adjective feminine we can: add -e, -x to -se, -el to -elle, -en to -enne, -f to -ve, -er to ère.
  • If an adjective ends in mute -e, there is no change to form the feminine e.g. 'triste'.
  • To form plural adjectives we add an -s, unless the adjective ends in -x or -s. -al and -eau change to -aux and -eaux.
  • [è] sounds like 'tête', important when pronouncing feminine agreements of adjectives ending in -er: 'entier', 'entière'.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • singular verb form: when you talk about something one person is doing: I, you, her or she
  • adjective: a word that gives information about a noun
  • noun: a word for a person, place or thing

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Adjectives ending in -al take -s to create the masculine plural form.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain what you can now say or understand in this lesson.

To make an adjective feminine we can: add -e, -x to -se, -el to -elle, -en to -enne, -f to -ve, -er to ère. If an adjective ends in mute -e, there is no change to form the feminine e.g. 'triste'.

2. Define this key language word and use it in context. 'singular verb form'

when you talk about something one person is doing: I, you, her or she. Say or write it in a short sentence so you use the word actively.

3. Correct this common language-learning mistake.

Mistake: Adjectives ending in -al take -s to create the masculine plural form. Correction: Adjectives ending in -al need a spelling change to create the masculine plural form. Remove the -l and add -ux for example 'familial' - 'familiaux' in the masculine plural form.
