Year 10 - Physical education

Long term adaptations to training

Anatomy and physiology: the short and long term effects of exercise

Unit Summary

This unit will explore the immediate responses our bodies make to cope with the effects of exercise as well as the longer term adaptations it makes in response to training that enable us to cope better with exercise and improve performance.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to describe the long-term effects of exercise on your body.

Key Notes

  • Long-term effects of exercise refer to the benefits/changes in health and fitness after a period of regular training.
  • Regular exercise leads to increased bone, muscle and joint strength.
  • Regular exercise leads to cardiac hypertrophy and increased oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.
  • Regular exercise leads to stronger respiratory muscles and increased lung volumes.
  • The body is able to recover faster from exercise after a period of training.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • long term effects of exercise: the effects on our body of months and/or years of regular physical activity
  • hypertrophy: the increase in size of skeletal or cardiac muscle
  • fatigue: muscle tiredness when the body has a lack of energy
  • capillarisation: the development of blood capillaries in the body which increases through long term effects of exercise

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Cardio-respiratory benefits only come from endurance training and muscle growth only comes from weight training.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Long-term effects of exercise refer to the benefits/changes in health and fitness after a period of regular training. Regular exercise leads to increased bone, muscle and joint strength.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'long term effects of exercise'

the effects on our body of months and/or years of regular physical activity.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Cardio-respiratory benefits only come from endurance training and muscle growth only comes from weight training. Correction: Any training that regularly puts the bodily systems under more strain than they are in normal life will lead to long term benefits to the muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. However, training intensity will effect results.
