The attacking role

Non-examined assessment: basketball practical

Unit Summary

This unit provides pupils with the knowledge and opportunity to replicate skills in isolation and in performance scenarios in basketball. As a popular team sport offered it will cover passing/receiving, dribbling, shooting, marking and defending and decision making in both attack and defence.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to use attacking strategies to create space and shooting opportunities in and around the key.

Key Notes

  • Move: playing basketball requires speed and stamina to execute attacking play around the key and 3 point line.
  • Think: movement off the ball helps to get free for a pass or screen to create space for others when attacking.
  • Feel: remaining in your attacking role will build confidence to control the ball moving through the court as a team.
  • Connect: effective teamwork requires everyone to take responsibility for their role in attack.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • 3 second rule: an attacking player does not stay in the key without the ball for longer than 3 seconds
  • screen: a non-ball handling player stands in the way of a defender to provide space for the player with the ball
  • pick and roll: after setting a screen, a player moves towards the basket to receive a pass
  • free throw: a shot taken from behind the free throw line after a foul on the offensive player when shooting

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Pupils think they are not permitted to jump on a free throw.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: playing basketball requires speed and stamina to execute attacking play around the key and 3 point line. Think: movement off the ball helps to get free for a pass or screen to create space for others when attacking.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? '3 second rule'

an attacking player does not stay in the key without the ball for longer than 3 seconds.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Pupils think they are not permitted to jump on a free throw. Correction: There is no rule stating a jump is not permitted, however the feet can not pass the free throw line so players chose to keep their feet planted on the ground.
