Year 10 - Physical education

Passing

Non-examined assessment: football practical

Unit Summary

This unit provides pupils with the knowledge and opportunity to replicate skills in isolation and in performance scenarios in association football. As a popular team sport offered by many pupils it will cover passing/ receiving, dribbling, shooting, ball control, tackling and decision making.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to pass over a range of distances with both feet.

Key Notes

  • Move: precision passes are made with the instep and follow through towards the intended target of the ball.
  • Move: passes over longer distances have a bigger backswing and follow through and use a different part of the foot.
  • Think: knowing when to perform a loft or drive pass for longer distances, will be determined by the position of others.
  • Feel: quick decision making helps maintain possession and build confidence on the ball to make the right pass.
  • Connect: communicating to the passer is key for them to read the direction and speed of the pass.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • one two: a short pass to a team mate and then receive a quick pass back into space or directly back to them
  • drive pass: striking with the ball with the laces or instep to pass over longer distances with speed and purpose
  • long range pass: a pass made over longer distance, often to switch play or launch an attack, often a lofted pass.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Pupils think that GCSE assessment for passing is just looking at the techniques in isolation.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'one two'

a short pass to a team mate and then receive a quick pass back into space or directly back to them.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Pupils think that GCSE assessment for passing is just looking at the techniques in isolation. Correction: Passing needs to be seen in progressive and conditioned practices to showcase the technique when faced with opposition and decision making.
