In this unit pupils will solve multiplication and division problems using knowledge of the scaling relationships between the 2-, 4- and 8-times tables.
You will learn to explain the relationship between multiples of 2 and multiples of 4.
Multiples of 4 are double the multiples of 2. Multiples of 2 are half the multiples of 4.
A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may generalise the rule and assume that when dividing by 4 is the last digit is even, then the number is divisible by 4. Correction: Show children the relationship between 2s and 4s using the multiplication chart. Make clear that identifying the last digit as even is the first step - the last 2 digits should be a multiple of 4. Encourage discussions to highlight the relationship.
