2, 4 and 8 times tables: using times tables to solve problems
In this unit pupils will solve multiplication and division problems using knowledge of the scaling relationships between the 2-, 4- and 8-times tables.
You will learn to explain the relationship between the multiples of 2, 4 and 8.
Multiples of 8 are multiples of 2 and of 4. If you double the multiples of 2 you get the multiples of 4.
A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Lack of fluency in 2s, 4s, or 8s times tables can mean that pupils struggle to generalise rules of and relationships within multiples of 2, 4 and 8. Correction: Take time to practically model grouping a set of objects in different ways. For example, take 24 straws and clearly show how groups of 2, 4 and 8 can be made. Discuss the relationships focusing on doubling and halving.
