Year 3 - Maths
Unit fractions as part of a whole
In this unit pupils will represent unit fractions in different ways, identifying the whole, the number of equal parts and the size of each part as a unit fraction, including tenths.
You will learn to explain the size of a part in relation to the whole.
Parts of the same sized whole can be compared. A bigger or smaller part of the whole can be shown.
The whole is all the parts or everything, the total amount. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: The part changes size when the whole changes. Correction: Use the bottles example in the slides to overcome this. Have a range of different sized containers for water and demonstrate the concept practically.
