Year 3 - Maths
Unit fractions as part of a whole
In this unit pupils will represent unit fractions in different ways, identifying the whole, the number of equal parts and the size of each part as a unit fraction, including tenths.
You will learn to identify a whole and the parts that make it up.
If __ is the whole then __ is part of the whole. You know what the whole is and can identify a part of the whole.
The whole is all the parts or everything, the total amount. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils might think that large objects or things such as England cannot be a part of a whole due to its size. Correction: Encourage pupils to work with parts and wholes that they can handle and experience but where parts are large, such as their school or class environment.
