In this unit pupils will explain the relationship between multiples of 3 and of 6. They will use this relationship and tests of divisibility for the 3- and 6-times tables to solve problems.
You know the divisibility rule for multiples of 3 and can use it with 3- and 4-digit numbers.
Numbers that can be divided by 3 and leave no remainder are divisible by 3. To find the digit sum of a number, add the digits in the number together so the digit sum of 17 is 1 + 7 which equals 8.
The sum of the digits of a number is called its digit sum. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Lack of understanding of key terms such as: 'digit,' 'number.'. Correction: Explain clearly the difference between the two key terms and encourage children to test the divisibility rule on both 3 digit and 4 digit numbers.
