Year 8 - Physical education

Apply the basic principles of training to your circuit

Health and wellbeing: long term benefits of physical activity through circuits

Unit Summary

This unit will explore the correct technique for body weight exercises along with an understanding of how to adapt and modify stations to ensure a training benefit. Pupils will learn about the physical, mental and social benefits of physical activity and how to ensure they are safe when training.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to apply the principles of training to your circuit.

Key Notes

  • Move: a full circuit training session is completed with good technique and full range of movement at the joints.
  • Think: progressive overload is incorporated into each station by increasing the reps or decreasing the rest interval.
  • Think: adaptations occur as a result of regular training, however if training stops, reversibility will occur.
  • Feel: to keep working when progressive overload has been applied to the circuit requires increased resilience.
  • Connect: being an effective gym buddy involves supportive feedback on technique and setting targets.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • progressive: gradual increase in the intensity or amount of exercise
  • overload: increasing the level of stress placed upon the body during exercise so fitness gains occur, but without potential for injury
  • reversibility: losing fitness levels when exercise is stopped (e.g. due to an injury)

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Pupils think that body adaptations will occur and stay from training only once.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: a full circuit training session is completed with good technique and full range of movement at the joints. Think: progressive overload is incorporated into each station by increasing the reps or decreasing the rest interval.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'progressive'

gradual increase in the intensity or amount of exercise.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Pupils think that body adaptations will occur and stay from training only once. Correction: Body adaptations like stronger muscles or better endurance don't happen after just one training session. To see improvements, you need to train regularly. If you stop training, your body can start to lose those gains – this is called reversibility.
