Year 1 - Maths
Numbers 0 to 20 in different contexts
In this unit pupils will consolidate their counting to 20. They will measure objects using non-standard and standard measures and record outcomes, providing a context for counting and comparing numbers to 20.
You will learn to measure length using objects and record the results in a table.
Lengths and heights can be measured using different objects. When you measure accurately, the objects you use to measure should be the same size.
Working carefully so that there are no mistakes. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may not use objects to measure accurately, for example following the shape of the object they are measuring rather than placing objects in a straight line. They may miscount the objects. Correction: Encourage children to build a straight line of objects with no gaps first, then place the object they want to measure along the line. Encourage them to touch each object as they count.
