Year 1 - Maths
Numbers 0 to 20 in different contexts
In this unit pupils will consolidate their counting to 20. They will measure objects using non-standard and standard measures and record outcomes, providing a context for counting and comparing numbers to 20.
You will learn to solve problems by using a ruler accurately to measure lengths in centimetres.
When using a ruler always measure starting from zero cm. Measuring length can help you find out if something will fit inside a container or not.
An object has more length than another. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may find it difficult to identify the 'then' part of the story because it is not found by measuring the length of the object. Correction: Encourage children to make jumps with their finger on the ruler to demonstrate how many cm are between the 'first' length and the 'now' length.
