Year 1 - Music

Composing a four beat rhythm

Compose and create: high and low melodic responses

Unit Summary

This unit uses a simple call and response song and a theming around fruit to inspire short compositions. Pupils learn two rhythms (Ta and Ta-di) and two notes (so and mi) and combine these to create fruit-inspired compositions which they perform as part of the call and response song.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to compose a four beat rhythm using Ta and Ta-di and play it with a steady pulse.

Key Notes

  • Beat and rhythm are not the same thing. We can play rhythms successfully when we are able to hold a steady beat.
  • Ta is one beat. Ta-di is also one beat long.
  • When we create new music we are composers. We can choose the sounds we like.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • rhythm: the pattern of sounds that we play and sing
  • beat: the playing or showing of the steady pulse, like the ticking of a clock
  • chant: speaking in time to a pulse
  • compose: to create music

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Rhythm and beat are the same thing.
