In this unit pupils will represent the 2x 10x table in different ways and use 2x 10x table to solve problems. They will explain the relationship between adjacent multiples of 2/10 and that factor pairs can be written in any order.

5 groups of 2 can be said as 2, five times so 5 x 2 = 2 x 5. Factor pairs can be written in any order.
Multiplication is commutative. This means the order of the factors can be changed without changing the calculation or product. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may confuse identifying the number of groups and group size. Correction: Use sentence stems to support children's thinking and model writing the equation, e.g. for 2 groups of 5 we can say 2 × 5 For 5, two times we can say 5 × 2.
