Year 2 - Physical education

Dodging when attacking and defending

Locomotion: running, jumping and dodging

Unit Summary

This unit will increase pupils' motor competence when dodging and jumping. Pupils will understand when and why we dodge and apply this knowledge showing self belief in simple games. Pupils will use their jumping skills in games too and use this understanding to jump in combination by linking jumps.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to dodge effectively when attacking and defending in a game.

Key Notes

  • Move: dodging effectively to catch an attacker requires us to react quickly and change direction.
  • Move: when attacking, it is important to react and move quickly into space to create an opportunity to dodge a defender.
  • Think: concentration is important when attacking and defending so we can react and dodge quickly in the game.
  • Feel: challenging ourselves to score points by continually dodging around your opponent shows self-belief.
  • Connect: playing by the rules and rotating roles throughout the lesson demonstrates an understanding of fairness.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • attackers: the team who is trying score as many points as possible
  • defenders: the team responsible for preventing the opposition (attackers) from scoring
  • react: how you respond or what you do when something happens

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Pupils might think that after one attacking or defending move, their job in the team is finished and they stand still and stop following the play.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: dodging effectively to catch an attacker requires us to react quickly and change direction. Move: when attacking, it is important to react and move quickly into space to create an opportunity to dodge a defender.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'attackers'

the team who is trying score as many points as possible.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Pupils might think that after one attacking or defending move, their job in the team is finished and they stand still and stop following the play. Correction: Often in a game, you will need to do some attacking work and some defending work. Concentrating and reacting to the actions of others will help you to decide if you need to attack or defend.
