Year 4 - Maths
Money: apply efficient strategies when calculating with money
In this unit pupils will explain represent and compare whole pounds and pence. They will convert quantities of money between pounds and pence and use the most efficient and reliable strategy to find the change.
You will learn to calculate change when purchasing more than one item.
Calculating change can be thought of as finding the difference between the cost and the amount of money given. If you are buying several items, you can add the total cost and then find the change.
The minuend is the number being subtracted from. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Errors in column addition can occur when pupils fail to align their digits properly. Correction: Encourage pupils to align their decimal points before setting out the rest of the calculation.
