In this unit pupils will explain represent and compare whole pounds and pence. They will convert quantities of money between pounds and pence and use the most efficient and reliable strategy to find the change.
You will learn to explain and represent whole pounds as a quantity of money.
Ten groups of 10p is equal to £1 so 10p is one tenth of £1. One hundred groups of 1p is equal to £1 so 1p is one hundredth of £1.
A unit of money used in the UK is pounds (£). Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils write 1£ because that is the order in which the expression is said. Correction: Provide plenty of opportunities for pupils to see and use the correct notation as well as highlighting wrong examples.
