Money: apply efficient strategies when calculating with money
In this unit pupils will explain represent and compare whole pounds and pence. They will convert quantities of money between pounds and pence and use the most efficient and reliable strategy to find the change.
You will learn to convert quantities of money between pounds and pence.
There are 100p in £1.00 so £3.00 is equivalent to 300p. There are 10 pennies in 10p so 4 ten pences are equivalent to 40 one pences.
When a value is changed from one form to another, it is converted. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils incorrectly multiply and divide by 100 when converting, or multiply and divide by 10 instead. Correction: Continue to emphasise the relationship between one pound and 100 pence and encourage pupils to spot patterns e.g. £2 = 200 p, £3 = 300 p.
