Year 5 - Computing

Making effective drawings

Introduction to vector graphics

Unit Summary

In this unit pupils discover how to use drawing tools to create vector images. They will recognise that images in vector drawings are created using shapes and lines and individual elements are called a objects. Pupils use layering, grouping and duplication to create more complex images.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to use software tools to adapt a vector drawing.

Key Notes

  • Using the zoom tool can help edit the detail of a drawing.
  • Alignment grids and resize handles should be used to help consistency.
  • Objects can be modified to create a new image.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • zoom: to make the view closer or further away without changing the size of the objects
  • align: to line up objects neatly, either side by side or on top of each other
  • border: the line around the outside of a shape, which you can change the colour, thickness or style of

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

Using the zoom tool can help edit the detail of a drawing. Alignment grids and resize handles should be used to help consistency.

2. Define this computing term and give one practical example. 'zoom'

to make the view closer or further away without changing the size of the objects. Add one real device or system example to prove understanding.

3. Correct this common computing misconception.

Mistake: Drawings can only be adjusted by eye view. Correction: Using zoom, you can have a much more detailed view and make smaller adjustments.
