Verb, adjective and noun suffixes

Unit Summary

In this unit, pupils learn spelling and grammar conventions associated with certain verb, adjective and noun suffixes like -ing, -ed, -s, -ies, -es, -ves, -ate, -en, -ify and -less. Pupils review and learn more examples of how the addition of a suffix can affect the grammar of a word.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to turn nouns from singular to plural when you add the suffix -s or by changing the 'y' to an 'i' and adding the suffix -es.

Key Notes

  • Adding -s or -es to a noun creates a plural.
  • If the word ends in a vowel (a, e, i, u) or consonant, just add -s.
  • If the word ends in 'y' preceded by a vowel, just add -s.
  • If the word ends in 'y' preceded by a consonant, remove the 'y' and add -ies.
  • How to spell the curriculum words: group, earth and yacht.

2. Define this language term and use it in a sentence. 'suffix'

a letter or group of letters added to the end of a root word.

3. Correct this common English misunderstanding.

Mistake: Children may not be able to spell the root word of plural nouns in focus. Correction: For children who need more support, provide the root word (singluar noun) as a starting point for Practise Task B, so they can focus on securing the rules around plurals.
