Year 5 - Maths
Find unit and non-unit fractions of whole numbers exploring parts and wholes
In this unit pupils will find unit and non-unit fractions of whole numbers and explore parts and wholes.
You will learn to use representations to find a unit fraction of a quantity.
The whole has been divided into __ equal parts and there are __ in each part. Use representations of sets of objects to divide them into equal parts.
A representation is a way of showing an idea or concept. One concept can be be shown by multiple representations. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils confuse the fraction part of each whole with the value of the number of items in each part. Correction: Progressively build from looking at the size of each part in relation to the whole using bar models to start with. After pupils are secure with this, introduce the quantities and be clear to distinguish between the value and size of each part.
