Year 6 - Computing

Modifying 3D objects

3D Modelling

Unit Summary

In this unit pupils will discover how computers can be used to produce 3D models. They will experience working in a 3D space, moving, resizing, and duplicating objects. They will then create hollow objects using placeholders and combine multiple objects to create a model of a desk tidy.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to identify that digital 3D objects can be modified.

Key Notes

  • When a shape is selected, a number of 'handles' appear.
  • The white corner handles will resize the objects in two dimensions, changing its width and length.
  • The black handles on each side of the base of the shape will resize the shape in one dimension, either width or length.
  • The black cone shaped handle on top of a shape enables you to lift or lower a shape relative to the workplane.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • handle: a shape that indicates when an object is selected, and that can be used to move and resize an object
  • resize: to change the size
  • recolour: to change the colour

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • The shape inspector is only used to change the length or width of a shape.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Describe the system or process from this lesson in clear steps.

When a shape is selected, a number of 'handles' appear. The white corner handles will resize the objects in two dimensions, changing its width and length.

2. Define this computing term and give one practical example. 'handle'

a shape that indicates when an object is selected, and that can be used to move and resize an object. Add one real device or system example to prove understanding.

3. Correct this common computing misconception.

Mistake: The shape inspector is only used to change the length or width of a shape. Correction: You can use the shape inspector to customise different properties of a shape, including recolouring shapes.
