In this unit pupils develop their understanding of factors and multiples, then extend this knowledge to learn general divisibility tests for integers and develop strategies to determine the highest common factor and lowest common multiple of two or more integers.
You will learn to use the prime factorisation of two or more positive integers to efficiently find their lowest common multiple.
Common multiples can be found using the prime factorisation of numbers. The lowest common multiple of two numbers can be found by comparing the prime factorisation of both numbers.
The lowest common multiple is the lowest number that is a multiple of two or more integers. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: When using a Venn diagram misplacement of factors is common. Correction: Encourage students to check that the product of factors in each set is the correct integer.
