Year 8 - Maths
Numerical summaries of data
In this unit pupils explore the concept of measures of central tendancy, developing understanding of different types of average and their relative benefits and drawbacks. We then investigate other summaries of data such as the range and data comparison techniques.
You will learn to calculate the median from data presented in a frequency table and different graphs.
The median can be calculated from a line graph. The median can be calculated from an ungrouped frequency table.
Data are a collection of information. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may choose the middle bar on the bar chart or the middle value on the x-axis as their median. Correction: Pull off the data from the bar chart or line graph to show where the median value is.
