In this unit pupils explore the concept of measures of central tendancy, developing understanding of different types of average and their relative benefits and drawbacks. We then investigate other summaries of data such as the range and data comparison techniques.
You will learn to understand what the range is measuring, how it is measuring it and calculate the range from data presented in a range of different ways.
The range is a measure of spread. The range is difference between the highest and lowest data point.
The range is a measure of spread. It is found by finding the difference between the highest and lowest values. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may often write the range as '3 to 10' or '10 - 3' rather than a single value. Correction: Remind pupils that the range is a single value which describes how far apart the extreme values are.
