Year 8 - Maths
Numerical summaries of data
In this unit pupils explore the concept of measures of central tendancy, developing understanding of different types of average and their relative benefits and drawbacks. We then investigate other summaries of data such as the range and data comparison techniques.
You will learn to understand what the mode is measuring, how it is measuring it and find the mode from data presented in a list.
The mode is a measure of central tendency. The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a data set.
the most frequent value. It is a measure of central tendency representing the average of the values. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may not understand what feature of a data set they're trying to find when identifying a mode. Correction: Phrase the question as 'What is the modal colour?' for instance, rather than just 'What is the mode?'.
