Year 1 - Maths
Counting to and from 20
In this unit pupils will consolidate counting to 20 and back They will secure their understanding of the teens numbers in a cardinal and an ordinal context.
You can count forwards and backwards from any number between 0 and 20.
Secure the sequence of numbers to and from 20. Practice one to one correspondence with actions and objects counting forwards and backwards.
The number that comes next in the count is one more than the previous number. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Failing to match one count to one action. Correction: Slow the counting and make the action and count very deliberately at the same time so pupils can imitate the modelling.
