Year 1 - Maths
Time - sequencing events and telling the time to the hour and half hour
In this unit pupils will sequence events in chronological order and recognise and use language relating to dates. They will tell the time to the hour and half past the hour linking to fractions.
You will learn to use the hour hand to show half past the hour.
The hour hand moves between the hours. When the hour hand is halfway between two hours, it is half past the last hour.
Half of an hour has passed. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: The left hand side of the clock can cause pupils problems when reading the clock to the half hour. For example, because half past nine is between nine and ten, pupils might read it as half past ten. Correction: Encourage pupils to focus on the word 'past' - which number has it gone past?
