Year 10 - Design and technology

Iterate with modelling: saving space

Saving space context

Unit Summary

Pupils will use disassembly to investigate an existing piece of flat-pack furniture, including material sources. They will use this information to inform designs. Pupils will focus on user-centred design to create and develop ideas and then plan the manufacturer for a product.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to iterate ideas for a piece of student furniture using card, foam and other materials.

Key Notes

  • Designers iterate as a direct result of testing, analysis and evaluation of a physical prototype.
  • Design iterations consider user needs and wants, this can be empathetic or direct feedback.
  • Analysis and evaluation can be carried out on design ideas to aid iterations.
  • By using the evaluation points, the designer can make informed decisions.
  • Design decisions lead to effective improvements that meet the needs and wants of the user.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • developing: improving and building on design ideas to make them better
  • iteration: process of refining and improving a design
  • analyse: to examine something in detail
  • evaluate: to think about what you did and suggest any changes or improvements

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Iterations of models are purely based on the thoughts of the designer.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Designers iterate as a direct result of testing, analysis and evaluation of a physical prototype. Design iterations consider user needs and wants, this can be empathetic or direct feedback.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'developing'

improving and building on design ideas to make them better.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Iterations of models are purely based on the thoughts of the designer. Correction: Iterations can be based off a range of analysis and evaluations such as evaluating against the users needs and wants as well as direct feedback from the user.
