Year 2 - Maths
Calculating within 20
In this unit pupils will add 3 addends. They will use a strategy such as finding 2 addends to total 10 or 2 numbers to bridge though 10.
You will learn to add two numbers that bridge through 10.
Partition one of the addends to make a pair that total 10 with the other addend. Use known facts to partition an addend.
The act of splitting an object or value down into smaller parts. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children use ten frames but use them to 'count all' or 'count on' without making 10. Correction: Ten frames can provide a great scaffold for all in this lesson when used to 'make 10'. Stress that we partition an addend to make 10 and that once the ten frame is full, it shows one ten so we do not need to count them all.
