Year 2 - Maths
Calculating within 20
In this unit pupils will add 3 addends. They will use a strategy such as finding 2 addends to total 10 or 2 numbers to bridge though 10.
You will learn to explain that the addends can be added in any order.
When we add three numbers, the sum will be the same whichever pair of addends we add first. The order of the addends can change and the sum will stay the same.
Any numbers that are added together. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may not understand that either pair of addends can be added first and the sum will remain the same. Correction: Use concrete materials to represent the addends for children to explore, discussing what is the same (the addends) and what is different (the pair being added first).
