In this unit pupils will use knowledge of place value to represent a 3-digit number in different ways. They will compare and order 3-digit numbers and position on number lines and unmarked number lines.
You will learn to write a 3-digit multiple of 10 as a multiplication equation.
Base ten blocks and 100s frames can represent multiples of ten. The symbol × means multiply or lots of.
An equation is used to show that one number or calculation is equal to another. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may explain the relationship with multiples of 10 as 'adding a zero' (e.g. 37 x 10 = 370). Correction: Pupils should be discouraged from doing this. Instead, explore place value, reminding pupils that each 100 represents 10 lots of ten.
