Year 4 - English
Noun and adjective suffixes
In this unit, pupils learn spelling and grammar conventions associated with certain noun and adjective suffixes like -ity, -ness, -tion, -sion, -ssion, -cian, -cial and -tial. Pupils review how the addition of a suffix can affect the grammar of a word, in most cases by changing its word class.
You will learn to spell words using the suffix -tion.
The suffix -tion creates abstract nouns. The most common spelling for the /shun/ suffix is -tion.
a naming word for a person, place or thing.
Mistake: Pupils may misspell the root of the word, rather than the suffix. Correction: Spend time discussing what is unexpected or challenging about the stem of the focus words as well as the -tion endings.
