Year 5 - Maths
Converting units
In this unit pupils will apply memorised unit conversions to convert between units of measure and solve problems involving converting between units of time and money.
You will learn to convert between miles and kilometres, and pounds and Euro.
5 miles is roughly equivalent to 8km. Conversion graphs can be used to convert from one unit to another.
A kilometre is a metric measure of distance, equal to 1,000 metres. It can be abbreviated to km. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Lots of practice has taken place for pupils to convert between kilometres and metres. Pupils may expect kilometres and miles to have a similar relationship and expect one mile to equal 1,000 metres. Correction: Bar models and double number lines are excellent visual representations of the relationship and should help pupils to form a more concrete understanding of the equivalence between units. Displaying these will provide a prompt for pupils.
